Job Description: This postdoc position at the Medical University of South Carolina aims to understand the role of microbiome and B cell dysfunction in several human diseases: HIV, SLE, cannabis/cocaine of abuse, COVID-19, and Alzheimer’s disease. This postdoc position will involve conducting experiments, analyze data, and write manuscript, as well as helping running the lab.

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements: Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent.

Additional Knowledge, skill, ability preferred: The candidate is expected to have the experience of doing experiments related to neuroscience, immunology, and/or mouse models, but not necessary. 

Job Duties: Performs routine examination and testing of human subjects for research purposes. Assess immunologic markers using human samples for research purposes using ELISA, flow cytometry, western, and qPCR.  30%

 Perform mouse experiments (e.g., IHC, flow cytometry, ELISA, qPCR, etc). Give mice microbiome or other chemicals based on each project, and collect blood and each organs including brains from mice. Obtain mouse brain tissues based on different area, and analyze neuron toxic markers (e.g., neuron counts, APP, p-Tau, Amyloid-beta 1-42), markers of microglia and astrocyte activation (e.g., IBA1, CD45, TMEM119), and neuroinflammation (e.g., MCP-1, IL-6). Conduct behavioral tests (e.g., memory, anxiety).  30%

Records and analyzes results of research experiments. Collect research experimental data, analyze results, generate figures, and write manuscripts. 20%

Maintain lab routine work. Autoclave the biologic trash and prepare and maintain lab work (e.g., fill and autoclave tips, clean hood and incubator). 10%

Train new lab members. Train new lab members for basic experiments. 10%

(Frequent) Ability to lift and carry 25-30 lbs. jugs of liquid a distance of 100 feet, unassisted. (Infrequent) Ability to lift file boxes, from floor level to counter tops, unas- sisted. (Frequent) Ability to push/ Ability to lift 40 lbs. centrifuge rotors from floor level to height of 40 inches, then down 20 inches into centrifuge drum, unassisted. (Infrequent) Ability to lift 25 lbs. boxes, from floor level to maximum height of 72 inches, unassisted. (Infrequent) Ability to push/pull file boxes from one location to another at floor level. (Frequent) Ability to maneuver heavy equipment on bench tops, 50 lbs. or greater, unassisted. (Frequent) Ability to perform gross motor functions with frequent fine motor movements. (Continuous) Ability to maintain 20/20 vi- sion, corrected. (Continuous) Ability to match or discriminate between colors, normally. (Continuous) Ability to hear and recognize various alarms emitting from work area systems. (Continuous) Ability to hear and/or understand conversations. (Continuous) Ability to work in a darkroom for processing film, etc.(Continuous) Ability to be qualified physically for respirator use, initially and annually. (Continuous)
