Job Description

The Health, Wellness and Human Performance Collaborative Integrated Center of Clinical Excellence (ICCE) exists to help optimize well-being leveraging evidence-based application of exercise, nutrition, and mental health.  The Chief, Health, Wellness and Human Performance ICCE is responsible for guiding strategic direction, program development, financial performance, patient access, quality of care and annual goal achievement of the ICCE. 

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership, Vision, and Growth:

  • Partners with MUSC Health Strategic Planning and Health Solutions to develop and articulate a clear vision for the ICCE that aligns with the MUSC Health’s overall objectives, leading innovative program development to meet the evolving needs of our community.
  • Champions innovative practices, research, and technological advancements that contribute to the science of health, wellness, and human performance, ensuring the ICCE remains at the cutting edge of clinical and operational excellence.
  • Collaborates with pICCE Chiefs, COM Department Chairs, MUSCP Leaders, Divisional CEOs and other stakeholders to develop and integrate exercise, nutrition, mental health and other health and wellness services into both curative and preventive care.
  • Fosters strong collaborative relationships within the ICEE, across the institution, and with external partners to enhance integrated care delivery, research initiatives, and educational programs.
  • Actively engage in relationship development with key stakeholders in the health and wellness community to foster partnerships, enhance public engagement, and integrate community resources.

Clinical Delivery & Quality:

  • Monitors and evaluates operational efficiency, patient experience, clinical quality & practice improvement initiatives of patient care within the ICCE.
  • Identifies, prioritizes, and drives development of MUSC Ideal Care Plans with focus on achieving ever increasing adoption of safe practices to improve quality metrics; supports development of care plans across other ICCE through sharing of best practices and subject matter expertise
  • Identifies opportunities for ICCE performance improvement from both clinical and administrative perspective and works toward enhancing performance to meet or exceed standards.
  • Works with clinical operations leaders to continually review and improve care coordination and care delivery processes.

Operational & Financial Performance

  • Accountable for overall ICCE financial performance, collaborating with other health system leaders to measure and drive improvements.
  • Continuously reviews efforts made to improve appropriateness of care, ensuring performance is in line with benchmarks.
  • Helps monitor and drive access across the ICCE and the broader MUSCH care network in an effort to drive growth.
  • Partners with ICCE leaders to Integrate health, wellness, and human performance principles into all aspects of care delivery and chronic disease management to improve patient outcomes and quality of life.
  • Expectation is to have the ICCE develop programs that can be integrated with each of the other ICCEs; for example, exercise programs in the care of our patients with serious chronic illnesses such as cancer, heart disease, and diabetes. 
  • Expectation is to have the ICCE help lead a holistic strategy in weight management, including our patients with obesity.
  • Participates in the health system's annual budgeting and forecasting processes; advises on necessary capital investments as requested.
  • Monitors and drives improvements in Finance Pillar KPIs, as measured by organizational scorecard.
  • Recommends methods by which the most economical use of equipment and supplies can be assured without compromising patient care / treatment.
  • Supports networking and relationship development of referring providers.

Provider, Trainee, and Practitioner Oversight

  • Attract, retain, and develop a high-performing, multidisciplinary team, promoting continuous learning, collaboration, and professional growth to sustain a vibrant clinical and academic environment.
  • Facilitates professional development of trainees within the ICCE with emphasis on clinical, business, operational and leadership competencies.
  • Monitors provider/practitioner utilization, productivity, access, and clinical outcomes as it relates to established benchmarks and KPIs; collaborates with employing entities to provide feedback, mentoring, and when necessary, disciplinary action.

Additional Job Description

Requirements & Qualifications

MD or DO degree from an accredited institution with board certification in a relevant specialty.

Valid South Carolina medical license.

Minimum of 10 years of clinical experience, with at least 5 years in leadership roles within a complex healthcare setting.

Demonstrated experience in designing and implementing health wellness programs, with a strong emphasis on primary care, mental health, women’s health, health equity, population health and human performance.

Commitment to health and wellness and the integration of best practices into clinical care.

Must possess entrepreneurial traits and is a positive leader with excellent interpersonal skills.

Must be highly respected as a strategic and operational leader with a proven ability to manage and grow an integrated business unit within a highly matrixed organization.

Expert financial and people management skills and a proven ability to excel in a leadership position with an emphasis on program growth.

Experience with financial operations including but not limited to P&L management, budget and forecasting preparation, etc.

Strong communicator, being both assertive and encouraging to motivate and inspire others to achieve mutually beneficial relationships and the highest performance standards

Effective team builder, with proven experience managing and working with and across physician and non-physician teams

Politically savvy, with a high tolerance for ambiguity and proven ability to work successfully in a highly matrixed organization
