Job Description Summary

The Burn Program Clinical Program Coordinator reports to the Burn Program Manager. The Coordinator assists in facilitating the care delivery for burn patients across the healthcare continuum. The responsibilities for this position include but are not limited to promoting, optimal outcomes for burn patients, reducing readmissions, patient and family education, staff education, facilitating reduction in the length of stay, and coordinating the standards of care and care delivery from admission to discharge. The position requires knowledge in the current burn and trauma standards set in place by the American Association of Surgery for Trauma and the American Burn Association.

Job Description

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include:

  • Coordinates burn care management across the continuum of burn care, including planning and implementation of clinical protocol/practice management guidelines, monitoring of acute and ambulatory patients, and serving as a resource for clinical practice to healthcare providers.
    • Coordinated burn staff education
    • Clinical resource for staff and consults to other departments when needed.
    • Participates in the evaluation of patients referred to the Burn Center.
    • Provide direct patient care as needed
    • Independently performs wound care
    • Educate patients and families
    • Assists with outpatient visits
    • Collaborate with nursing and medical staff to facilitate the continuum of care for the burn patient from the acute care setting through the outpatient phase
    • Content expert to identify deficiencies and opportunities for improvement, implementation of the process improvement plan and provide loop-closure
  • Participates in the continuum of burn care with the planning and implementation of burn center guidelines, monitor the care of the burn patient and act as a resource to improve clinical practice for the burn injured patient.
    • Collaborates in the development of protocols and guidelines for Burn and Wound patient management.
    • Develop, implement, and evaluate comprehensive nursing education programs.
    • Participate and develop performance improvement programs and projects.
    • Provide consultation to other nurses and health care professionals who provide care to burn patients.
    • Collaborates with MUSC educational partners to identify gaps and develop education materials to achieve improved patient outcomes
  • Involved in research selection, analysis and distribution findings.  Assists in facilitating protocol design for accurate data collection, feedback and analysis. Research Responsibilities:
    • Support planning, and participation in clinical research projects
    • Participate in the development and implementation of research protocols.
    • Incorporate research findings into clinical practice.
  • Professional Development
    • Maintains current knowledge of burn care, nursing, and the healthcare environment.
    • Participates in professional organizations in clinical expertise to include burn care.
    • Participates in local, regional, and national conferences on burn and wound management.
    • Represents Burn Program on various hospital, community and national committees to enhance and foster optimal burn care management.
    • Assists in implementing ongoing interdisciplinary quality improvement projects to create a culture of safety and promote value-based programs.
  • Collaborates with the interdisciplinary team and community partners for the development and implementation of burn awareness and prevention programs.
    • Mentor burn care providers
    • Participate in the preceptor development and orientation processes
    • Participate in educational activities at MUSC for physicians, nurses, staff support or other healthcare providers
    • Collaborates with burn team in the development and dissemination of burn education materials

·RN Licensure in State of SC

·Minimum: 5 years clinical RN experience in emergency or critical care nursing with an emphasis on burn/trauma care.

  • Minimum: Bachelor’s Degree
  • American Burn Association membership within first 12 months

·ABLS certification preferred, with requirement to achieve in first 18 months

  • Demonstrated leadership skills; experience in a leadership or supervisory position is preferred. 
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills, organizational skills, and computer skills.

Additional Job Description

Education: Bachelor's Degree or Equivalent Work Experience: 8 years progressive work experience and 3 years management experience
