Job Description Summary

The Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences is seeking a candidate to fill their therapist position within the Women’s Reproductive Behavioral Health Division. This position is for a Licensed Independent Social Worker (LISW), Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), or Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) who will work collaboratively within an integrated behavioral health program and provide evidence-based psychotherapies to pregnant and postpartum women with mental health and substance use disorders. The position entails providing psychotherapies such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Interpersonal Psychotherapy, Mindfulness, Motivational Interviewing and Relapse Prevention, as appropriate, to peripartum women with mental health and substance use disorders. The candidate may also at time provide brief supportive therapy and therapy for perinatal grief and loss.

Services are provided in-person or via telemedicine. The candidate is responsible for communicating with the mental health, obstetric and/or pediatric providers to ensure care is coordinated and treatment plans are communicated effectively to all involved providers.

Job Purpose

The purpose of this position is to enhance an integrated behavioral health program and provide evidence-based psychotherapies to pregnant and postpartum women with mental health and substance use disorders in order to reduce the morbidity and mortality associated with these conditions.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide individual evidence-based psychotherapies primarily in an outpatient setting in-person or via telemedicine.
  • Provide group-based evidence-based psychotherapies primarily in an outpatient setting in-person or via telemedicine.
  • Coordinate care and effectively communicate treatment and treatment plans with other healthcare providers (i.e., Ob/Gyns, Pediatricians, other mental health and substance use disorder providers). Attend relevant team meetings and conferences.
  • May be asked to assist with conducting brief assessments, motivational interviewing and arranging mental health and substance use disorder treatment. 
  • May be asked to provide therapy on inpatient services for peripartum women.

Education: 

  • Licensed Social Worker (LISW): Master's Degree in Social Work or Social Welfare program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education required.
  • Licensed Professional Counselor: Master's Degree in Counseling for LPC from an accredited program.
  • Licensed Marriage Family Therapist: Meet educational requirements for licensure in South Carolina

Work Experience: Prior experience delivering evidence-based therapies for mental health and substance use disorders is required. Prior work within integrated behavioral health care models, facilitating groups, and/or work with peripartum women is ideal.

Required Licensure, Certifications, Registrations: 

  • Licensed Independent Social Worker (LISW), Licensed Professional Counselor, or Licensed Marriage Family Therapist:  licensure by the applicable South Carolina Board required.

Degree of Supervision: Minimal Supervision. Provider should be able to work independently.

Physical Requirements: Continuous requirements are to perform job functions while standing, walking and sitting. Ability to bend at the waist, kneel, climb stairs, reach in all directions, fully use both hands and legs, possess good finger dexterity, perform repetitive motions with hands/wrists/elbows and shoulders, reach in all directions. Ability to be qualified physically for respirator use, initially and as required.  Maintain 20/40 vision corrected, see and recognize objects close at hand and at a distance, work in a latex safe environment and work indoors.  Frequently lift, lower, push and pull and/or carry objects weighing 50 lbs (+/-) unassisted, exert up to 50 lbs of force, lift from 36” to overhead 25 lbs.   Infrequently work in dusty areas and confined/cramped spaces.
