Work Environment

Regularly exposed to the risk of blood-borne diseases. Contact with patients under a wide variety of circumstances. Exposed to unpleasant elements (accidents, injuries, and illnesses). Subject to varying and unpredictable situations. Must be able to handle emergency or crisis situations. May perform emergency care. Occasionally subjected to irregular hours.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Directs the flow of work on the unit.

Financial Responsibilities

Financial stewardship of supplies, resources and productivity.

Essential Functions

Communicates with House Supervisor regarding bed assignment.

Collaborates with staff to develop individualized plan of care via Interdisciplinary Care Planning rounds.

Assesses Performance Improvement Plan activities and assists staff in meeting goals.

Collaborates with Director in completing performance evaluations.

Facilitates and assists in daily rounding using Studer principles.

Coaches staff in hourly rounding, AIDET, ACT, use of white boards, clinical care, etc.

Communicates with Director on a regular basis re: day-to-day operational issues. Assists in the daily adjustments to staffing required to have appropriate nurse/patient ratios. Ensures compliance with matrix.

Provides first line customer service response.  Defuse situations; communicate clearly and appropriately with providers, staff, patients, and visitors. 

Assigns and/or completes duties listed on charge nurse report sheet, including crash cart checks, pyxis counts and discrepancy resolution, etc.

Ensures that quality metrics and core measures are completed in a timely manner to ensure compliance with all state and federal regulations.

Assists Department leaders in orientation of new employees and coaches preceptors.

Monitors daily infection prevention and control compliance.

Assumes on-call responsibilities as assigned by director.

Ensures discharge phone calls are completed in Discharge Call Manager as appropriate.

Reviews patient satisfaction data and collaborates with director regarding 90-day improvement plans.

All other duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements

Physical requirements are primarily related to the essential functions of the job. In order to perform the essential functions of this position, you must be able to stand up to twelve (12) hours, walk, sit, use hands, reach, stoop, talk, hear and smell.  Must be able to lift or exert energy up to 35 pounds.  The Regional Medical Center has purchased patient transfer/lift devices to reduce the physical lifting of patients.  Safe patient handling equipment is to be utilized for the transfer and lifting of patients greater than 35 pounds.

Close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less); distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more); color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors); peripheral vision (ability to observe area that can be seen up/down or left/right) and depth perception (three-dimensional vision, ability to judge distances).

Mental Requirements

Possesses the ability to read and interpret business or safety manuals, clinical or technical procedures or regulations. Able to write reports, correspondence, and/or manuals; effectively present information and respond to questions from groups, patients, families, other employees, and medical staff. Able to perform math functions (add, subtract, multiply and divide), and perform more complex math functions to include calculating percentages, averages, volume, ratio, and interpreting graphs – using numbers, money, and units of measure. 

Define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Deal with concrete and abstract concepts.  interpret verbal, nonverbal, and written instructions.  Must possess strong critical and logical thinking skills.

Population Served

This position interacts with all age groups and provides direct/indirect patient care. Each staff member must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skill necessary to meet the physical, psychosocial, educational, safety, and related needs of the persons in the assigned work area.  Staff members must be able to understand and respond to the expectations and needs of patients, family members and visitors from diverse cultural backgrounds.

Additional Job Description

Bachelor’s degree in nursing and registered nurse in the state of South Carolina with three (3) years’ experience in a clinical specialty.   ACLS certification required. Certification in clinical specialty preferred.
