Job Description Summary

Responsible for creating, planning, developing, coordinating and implementing a comprehensive fundraising program aimed at increasing private support for the MUSC College of Medicine and its departments. This position serves the Departments of Surgery, Orthopaedics and Physical Medicine, and Emergency Medicine with the primary focus being major gift fundraising. The position reports directly to the College of Medicine's Associate Dean for Development and works closely with departmental chairs, chiefs, faculty, administrators and central development staff. This position may supervise development staff.

Working collaboratively with department chairs, the Associate Dean for Development for the College of Medicine, and other key college and institutional leaders, the Director of Development will identify, create, and implement successful fundraising programs which provide an ongoing basis of private support for assigned departments and centers.  Ensures program effectiveness in all phases of the major gift fundraising cycle:  identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship.  Advises chairs, division directors, and faculty on development strategy.

Manages a portfolio of patients, families, community members, and alumni prospects to advance development priorities of the department(s), college and institution.  Develops strategies for each major prospect and conducts regular outreach.  Meets established goals (e.g. dollars raised, solicitations made, solicitations funded, visits, contacts, prospects qualified, etc.).  Enters actions into database and keeps solicitations up-to-date.

Collaborates effectively with institutional and advancement leaders, MUSC Foundation, Advancement Services, Communications, Annual Giving, Principal Giving, Corporate and Foundation Relations, and other colleagues to meet the needs of donors and departments.  Manages advisory boards approved by the institution and Associate Dean for Development.

Manages direct reports to include on-boarding, time-keeping, goal-setting, and coaching to meet development objectives.

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:
A bachelor's degree and four years of development experience.


Preferred Qualifications:
A proven track record of major gift fundraising in healthcare and higher education is strongly preferred. 

A minimum of seven or more years of development experience is preferred.  Experience using Blackbaud’s Raiser's Edge, NXT, or other similar prospect management system.  Must be able to work within a complex, multi-faceted organization to establish philanthropic and productivity goals, set action plans and achieve stated and agreed-upon objectives.  Must be a “self-starter”, ambitious and goal-oriented.  Must have strong leadership, interpersonal and communications (written and oral) skills.  Ability to establish excellent working relationships with all constituents is required.  Must have ability to develop budgets and monitor expenditures, as assigned.

Minimum: $66,892.00 -Mid Point: $95,327.00 -Maximum: $123,763.00
