The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) Department of Neurology seeks a qualified individual to join the faculty as the Residency Program Director. Board certified Neurologists of all subspecialities are welcome to apply. Women and minority applicants are encouraged to apply. MUSC Neurology is not accepting VISA candidates at this time.

Job Description

The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) has had an Adult Neurology Residency Program since 1956. It is a categorical 4 year program with a complement of 32 residents (8 residents per class). Residents in the program benefit from training in the largest academic neurology department and tertiary medical center in the state of South Carolina with subspecialists in all areas of neurology. While many choose to stay for fellowships at MUSC, residents routinely match into top fellowship programs throughout the country. The residency program is well established and has many strengths to ensure the success of a new program director including:

  • Department and college leadership who fully support graduate medical education
  • Two associate program directors
  • Two program coordinators
  • Newly renovated large neuro-education suite
  • Newly renovated neurology clinic space
  • An opportunity to build an educational collaboration with King’s College in London
  • An education first program where residents have the time and support to follow their passions

Already a strong program, the department of neurology is looking for a candidate to take the program to the next level and make it the destination program in the Southeast. Interested candidates should have experience in and passion for neurology education as well as an interest in innovation.  

The Department of Neurology at MUSC is a rapidly growing academic program located in beautiful Charleston, South Carolina. Charleston is one of the most historic cities in the southeastern United States and offers a wide variety of recreational activities including swimming, sailing, kayaking, fishing and golf. There are numerous excellent restaurants, and the Spoleto Festival brings exceptional cultural events to the area every year.

(Continuous) Ability to lift and carry 150 lbs., unassisted. (Frequent) Ability to lift objects, up to 75 lbs., from floor level to height of 36 inches, unassisted. (Frequent) Ability to lower objects, up to 75 lbs., from height of 36 inches to floor level, unassisted. (Frequent) Ability to lift and carry patients weighing up to 300 lbs., assisted. (Frequent) Ability to push/pull objects, up to 200 lbs., unassisted. (Frequent) Ability to maintain 20/40 vision, corrected. (Continuous) Ability to see and recognize objects close at hand. (Continuous) Ability to see and recognize objects at a distance. (Continuous) Ability to match or discriminate between colors. (Continuous) Ability to determine distance/relationship between objects; depth perception. (Continuous) Good peripheral vision capabilities. (Continuous) Ability to maintain hearing acuity, with correction. (Continuous) Ability to hear and understand whispered conversations at a distance of 3 feet. Must be able to maintain bi-lateral hand movement skills. (Continuous) Ability to perform gross motor functions with frequent fine motor movements. (Continuous) Ability to be qualified physically (by medical personnel) for respirator use, initially and annually.
Additional New Requirements: Ability to maintain a valid drivers license. Computer literacy. Ability to work rotating shifts. Ability to work overtime as required. Ability to learn and use new processes, tools and equipment as required.
