Job Description Summary

The Department of Emergency Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina is seeking a highly motivated, talented academic clinician to join the Department as our new Director of Research. Desirable candidates will hold the academic rank of Associate Professor or Professor, commensurate with experience and credentials, on the tenured academic-clinician track.  The Department’s goal is to grow research and scholarly output as a whole, while building a nationally recognized research program.

This position will report directly to the Chair of Emergency Medicine.  Successful candidates will have a demonstrated expertise in leading research in Emergency Medicine, a track record of independently-funded research, publication in high-impact, peer-reviewed journals, strong mentorship skills and clear evidence of promoting the academic careers of fellow faculty and trainees.

In addition to being a productive researcher, the role of the Director of Research will be to oversee and enhance the scholarly and research programs by mentoring faculty, advanced practice providers and trainees.  As such, the director shall work closely with residency and fellowship directors, as well as appropriate chiefs, directors, and vice chairs.  The director will be charged with expansion of the Department’s investigative research and extramural funding portfolios. 

The Director of Research must possess the interpersonal skills to engage, inspire and work within and across disciplines in a large, diverse organization.  Interfacing with other departments and centers in order to enhance visibility of EM research within the larger College of Medicine and University research communities will be required.

Applicants must have graduated from an accredited Emergency Medicine Residency Program and be board certified by ABEM or AOBEM with experience in translational and/or clinical research.

Job Description

Job Duties:

  • Assist the Chair in enhancing all aspects of departmental research.
  • Develop a robust portfolio of clinical trials and publications.
  • Seek and obtain extramural funding.
  • Develop department research infrastructure, to include department QA/Outcomes database. 
  • Provide mentoring/support to departmental faculty in all aspects of research, including abstract and poster presentations, manuscript publications, and grant preparation, to help grow their research portfolios.
  • Provide mentoring/support to residents and fellows, including selection of research mentors and research projects, identification and pursuit of research funding, and long-term academic career counseling, as well as manuscript publications and abstract poster presentations.
  • Provide mentoring/support to departmental Advanced Practice Providers (APP) in all aspects of research.
  • Provide education to residents and faculty regarding processes of developing a research idea, obtaining IRB/regulatory approvals, carrying out data collection, and completing data analysis.
  • Provide education to faculty regarding identification of funding opportunities and grant writing/funding applications.
  • Demonstrate an increase in faculty and resident research and academic productivity. 
  • Interface with other Departments and Centers in order to enhance visibility of emergency medicine research within the larger College of Medicine and University research communities.
  • Maintain and publish active list of potential and ongoing research projects in department.
  • Lead monthly research discussion during faculty meeting to foster departmental collaboration.

Departmental Support:

Salary is based on academic rank and is determined by the College of Medicine. In addition, 30% effort will be provided and continued if duties and expectations are met as described above. Effort may be further bought down from grants and other income sources, with expected timely communication of any changes in clinical requirements to the Chair.
