CLASSIFICATION: As established by state certification standards

FLSA STATUS: Exempt

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Salary and work year as reviewed and established annually by the Board of Education

EVALUATION: Performance of this position will be evaluated regularly in accordance with the Board’s

policy on the evaluation of professional staff.

JOB SUMMARY

To screen, identify, assess, diagnose, refer, provide intervention for, and to provide counsel (to include students, parents
and teachers) for individuals with gross motor deficits.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Depending upon individual assignment, the employee may perform all or a combination of several of the following duties:

Area I – Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

1. Knowledge of physical therapy principles, theory, methods and evidence based practice.

2. Knowledge of effective practice, clinical decision making, and outcomes based intervention and their proper
application in the educational environment.

3. Knowledge of areas of practice specific to pediatrics, including child development and specific diagnoses.

4. Knowledge of administrative management practices.

5. Ability to plan, implement, administer and coordinate a physical therapy program, from eligibility determination
to exit, within an LEA.

6. Ability to select and administer appropriate assessment tools and interpret results of assessment.

7. Skill in selecting and providing a wide range of intervention strategies and monitoring their effectiveness.

8. Ability to plan, coordinate and provide training and continuing education both formally and informally to
parents, school administration, school staff, community agencies, staff and other medical professionals.

9. Skill in effective oral and written communication.

10. Knowledge of current legal mandates, including: Federal and State law, compliance issues, confidentiality
requirements, funding procedures and requirements.

11. Physical ability to execute job responsibilities that may include: transferring and/or lifting students or
equipment, managing equipment.

Area II – Essential Functions

1. Assesses students’ functional capabilities and/or classroom environment for the purpose of determining
student’s functional level and developing recommendations and/or curriculum access.

2. Assesses students’ gross motor and development skills (e.g. perceptual-motor, motor coordination, sensory
development, muscle strength, etc.) for the purpose of determining their deficits and developing
recommendations.

3. Communicates with students, parents, teachers and/or other personnel for the purpose of evaluating
situations, solving problems and/or resolving conflicts.




4. Consults with students, parents and guardians for the purpose of enhancing student access and mobility in
school and in school related activities/functions.

5. Consults with teachers, parents, other personnel and/or outside professionals for the purpose of providing
requested information, developing plans for services and/or making recommendations.

6. Coordinates with the IEP team for the purpose of determining appropriate treatments, etc. to meet the needs
of specific students and attends IEP Team meetings.

7. Develops treatment plans, interventions and/or educational materials from the IEP for the purpose of
remediating students’ motor skill deficits and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.

8. Identifies structural issues for the purpose of removing barriers for students with physical limitations and/or
identify appropriate adaptive equipment and/or devices.

9. Instructs students and staff for the purpose of providing information on medical attributes, use of adaptive
equipment and/or implementing plans for remediation of functional limitations.

10. Participate in meetings, workshops and seminars as assigned for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering
information required to perform functions.

11. Prepares a wide variety of written materials in compliance with State, Federal, and administrative regulations
(e.g. IEP goals, progress reports, student activities, correspondence, internal audits, etc.) for the purpose of
documenting activities, providing written reference, and/or conveying information.

12. Provides services at multiple work sites for the purpose of providing direct therapy interventions and
assistance as required.

13. Researches resources and methods (e.g. intervention and treatment techniques, assessment tools and
methods, community resources, etc.) for the purpose of determining the appropriate approach for addressing
students’ functional goals.

14. Screens students for the purpose of determining the need for further individual assessment.

15. Transports supplies and equipment to a variety of sites for the purpose of ensuring the availability of items
desired.

16. Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of
the district.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES – AS NEEDED

1. Supervises physical therapist assistants or paraprofessionals for the purpose of monitoring performance, providing
for professional growth and achieving overall objectives of school’s curriculum as well as meeting the needs of
students.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND/OR CERTIFICATION

1. Degree in physical therapy from an accredited program.

2. Licensed to practice physical therapy in Missouri.

3. Ability to lift 50 – 150 lbs.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS

1. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from administration, faculty, parents, students,
and the school community.

2. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or
governmental regulations.

3. Ability to write reports, correspondence, and procedure manuals consistent with the duties of this position.




MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

1. Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference.

2. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations that are
directly related to the duties of this position.

REASONING ABILITY

1. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited
standardization exists.

2. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

and federal laws, methods, requirements, policies, procedures, and activities pertinent to the duties of this position.

22. Ability to prepare and maintain accurate files and records.

23. Ability to meet strict deadlines.

24. Ability to apply knowledge and competence in the communication areas of language, articulation/phonology, voice,
fluency, and feeding/swallowing.

25. Ability to apply knowledge and competence of the comprehensive speech and language evaluation process. Ability
to administer and interpret standardized testing instruments.

26. Ability to apply knowledge and competence in generating educationally relevant goals and objectives based on the
communication needs of the individuals in keeping with district and state guidelines.

27. Ability to perform documentation standards. Maintain confidentiality, unquestionable integrity.

28. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with student, peers, and parents.

29. Consistent punctuality and attendance is representative of concern for job responsibility.

30. Ability to demonstrate flexibility in a positive manner.

31. Stays current with field through attendance at professional conferences.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, and talk or hear, and
sometimes walk and sit. While performing the duties of this job, the employee must occasionally push or lift up to 50
pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read handwritten or typed material, and
the ability to adjust focus. The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and interact
with the public and other staff.
