Job Description

Summary: As an Exercise Physiologist at MUSC, you will play a pivotal role in promoting health and wellness by designing and implementing exercise programs tailored to individual patients' needs and goals. With your expertise in exercise science and physiology, you will assess patients' fitness levels, develop personalized exercise prescriptions, and provide ongoing guidance and support to help them achieve optimal health outcomes.

Key Responsibilities:

Conduct Fitness Assessments: Perform comprehensive fitness assessments, including cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, body composition analysis, and functional movement screening.

Develop Exercise Prescriptions: Design individualized exercise programs based on patients' fitness assessment results, medical history, and personal goals, incorporating aerobic exercise, resistance training, flexibility exercises, and other modalities as appropriate.

Provide Exercise Instruction: Educate patients on proper exercise techniques, safety guidelines, and the importance of adherence to their exercise program, ensuring they understand how to perform exercises correctly and safely.

Monitor Progress: Regularly assess patients' progress and adjust exercise prescriptions as needed to ensure continued improvement and adaptation, tracking changes in fitness levels, health markers, and overall well-being.

Offer Lifestyle Counseling: Provide guidance on lifestyle factors that impact health and fitness, including nutrition, stress management, sleep hygiene, and behavior modification strategies, to support patients in adopting healthy habits.

Supervise Exercise Sessions: Lead individual and group exercise sessions, providing hands-on supervision, encouragement, and motivation to help patients stay engaged and accountable to their fitness goals.

Collaborate with Healthcare Team: Work closely with physicians, physical therapists, dietitians, and other healthcare professionals to coordinate care, address patient needs comprehensively, and ensure continuity of care across disciplines.

Educate and Advocate: Serve as a resource and advocate for exercise and physical activity promotion within the community, delivering educational seminars, workshops, and outreach programs to raise awareness of the importance of regular exercise for health and well-being.

Qualifications:

  • Associate degree in exercise science, kinesiology, or a related field from an accredited institution.
  • Certified Exercise Physiologist (CEP) credential from a recognized certifying organization such as the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) or equivalent certification preferred.
  • Previous experience working as an exercise physiologist or fitness professional in a clinical or community setting preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of exercise physiology, biomechanics, and exercise prescription principles, with the ability to apply evidence-based practices to individualized patient care.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to establish rapport with patients, effectively convey complex information, and motivate behavior change.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team, collaborating with colleagues to achieve common goals and deliver coordinated patient care.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development and staying current with advancements in exercise science and related fields.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to perform fitness assessments and lead exercise sessions in various settings, including clinical facilities, fitness centers, and outdoor environments.
  • Stamina and endurance to stand, walk, and engage in physical activity for extended periods during exercise sessions and patient interactions.
  • Manual dexterity and coordination to demonstrate exercises, use fitness equipment, and perform hands-on assessments with patients.
  • Visual and auditory acuity to observe and evaluate patients' movement patterns, provide feedback on exercise technique, and communicate effectively in a healthcare setting.
