Job Description Summary

Position Title: Director, Medical Staff Services
Location: Charleston Division (Charleston and Orangeburg Campuses)
Reports To: Executive Director of Medical Staff Services
Dotted Line Reporting: Medical Center CEO and Chief Medical Officers (CMOs), MUSC College of Medicine Dean’s Office

The Medical Staff Services Director for the Charleston Division is responsible for overseeing all Medical Staff Services across the Charleston and Orangeburg Campuses. This leadership role ensures the efficient and compliant functioning of the Medical Staff Services Department, with a strong emphasis on system standardization, quality improvement, and regulatory compliance. The Director will be based at the Downtown Campus in Charleston and will be expected to travel to the Orangeburg Campus 2-3 times a month or as needed.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leadership & Management:
    • Provide strategic direction and leadership for Medical Staff Services across both campuses.
    • Ensure the effective operation of Medical Staff Services in compliance with accrediting bodies and regulatory agencies, including but not limited to The Joint Commission and CMS.
    • Parter with the Director, Medical Staff Services for the Regional Health Network on the development and implementation of standardized processes and policies for credentialing, privileging, and additional Medical Staff functions.
    • Foster a culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement within the Medical Staff Services Department.
    • Cross Cover with the Director, Medical Staff Services for the Regional Health Network
  • System Standardization:
    • Drive initiatives to standardize Medical Staff-related functions across the System.
    • Collaborate with other Medical Staff Services Directors within the system to ensure alignment and consistency of practices.
  • Medical Staff Liaison:
    • Serve as the primary liaison between the Medical Staff, hospital administration, and other key stakeholders.
    • Facilitate communication and collaboration between the Medical Staff and hospital leadership.
  • Credentialing & Privileging:
    • Oversee the credentialing and privileging processes to ensure they are conducted in a timely, thorough, and compliant manner.
    • Ensure all Medical Staff members meet the necessary qualifications and are properly credentialed and privileged to provide patient care.
  • Regulatory Compliance:
    • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of relevant laws, regulations, and accreditation standards affecting Medical Staff Services.
    • Ensure the department’s practices and procedures are in full compliance with all regulatory requirements.
    • Prepare for and participate in audits, surveys, and inspections related to Medical Staff Services.
  • Quality & Performance Improvement:
    • Lead efforts to continuously improve the quality and efficiency of Medical Staff Services.
    • Develop and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) to assess the effectiveness of the department.
    • Implement corrective actions as necessary to address identified issues.

Travel Requirements:

Regular travel to the Orangeburg Campus 2-3 times per month or as needed to support Medical Staff Services operations.

Qualifications:

  • Education:
    • Bachelor’s degree in Healthcare Administration, Business Administration, or a related field required.
  • Experience:
    • Minimum of 5-7 years of progressive leadership experience in Medical Staff Services or related healthcare management.
    • Extensive experience with credentialing, privileging, and peer review processes.
    • Familiarity with regulatory requirements and accreditation standards (The Joint Commission, CMS, etc.).
  • Skills:
    • Strong leadership and management skills, with the ability to lead a team across multiple campuses.
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with Medical Staff, hospital leadership, and other stakeholders.
    • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
    • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
    • Proficiency in relevant software systems (e.g., credentialing software, MS Office).

Additional Information:

  • Work Environment:
    • Primarily based at the Charleston Downtown Campus with travel to the Orangeburg Campus as required.
  • Physical Requirements:
    • Ability to travel between campuses as needed.
    • Must be able to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
