Job Description:

Plays an integral and independent role in the daily operation of the Electron Microscopy Clinical Core Facility, performing all aspects of specimen preparation and analysis leading to production of ultra-thin sections, examination of specimens with transmission, electron microscope and capture and storage of digital images for transfer  to clinicians and investigators. 

Job Duties:

To complete all fixation, embedding, staining, and sectioning protocols necessary to generate samples for the production of  thick and thin sections for electron microscopic examination.  25% 

To maintain and operate the transmission electron microscope to generate and store appropriate digital images used in diagnostic protocols. 25% 

To inventory, order and maintain all supplies critical to laboratory function and communicate with electron microscopy service providers to ensure fully functional instrumentation essential for timely specimen preparation and analysis. 20% 

To record, label and document all clinical specimens received by the laboratory and ensure that records and results are maintained and transmitted to clinicians and other users of the laboratory.  15% 

To maintain and update all protocols and other information required for annual CAP inspections in the database provided.  10% 

To cross train existing personnel in the research core to provide emergency back up for specimen pick up and processing. 5% 

Minimum Requirements:

A bachelor's degree in chemistry, biology, or other natural, life or health care science and one year work experience directly related to the assigned research area.

Ability to lift 40 lbs. centrifuge rotors from floor level to height of 40 inches, then down 20 inches into centrifuge drum, unassisted. (Infrequent)
Ability to lift 25 lbs. boxes, from floor level to maximum height of 72 inches, unassisted. (Infrequent)
Ability to push/pull file boxes from one location to another at floor level. (Frequent)
Ability to maneuver heavy equipment on bench tops, 50 lbs. or greater, unassisted. (Frequent)
Ability to perform gross motor functions with frequent fine motor movements. (Continuous)
Ability to maintain 20/40 vision, corrected, in one eye or with both eyes. (Continuous)
Ability to match or discriminate between colors, normally. (Continuous)
Ability to hear and recognize various alarms emitting from work area systems. (Continuous)
Ability to hear and/or understand conversations. (Continuous)
Ability to work in a darkroom for processing film, etc. (Continuous)
Ability to be qualified physically for respirator use, initially and annually. (Continuous)

Ability to work rotating shifts as required.

Ability to learn and use new processes, tools and equipment as required.
